Google to shut Bump and Flock apps on January 31

Bump, the app that made data sharing between devices a simple task is calling it quits on January 31. The move comes only three months after the company was acquired by Google. Along with Bump, Flock, the photo-sharing app, will be killed off as well at the end of this month.

In a blog post announcing the decision, CEO and Co-Founder of Bump, David Lieb announced that January 31, 2014 will be the day Bump is shut down. Both Bump and Flock apps will be removed from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Starting February this year, neither apps will be available for download, they will not work anymore and all user data will be deleted.

“We are now deeply focused on our new projects within Google, and we’ve decided to discontinue Bump and Flock,” Lieb wrote, “In many ways, Bump was a revolutionary product that inspired many subsequent advances and helped push the world forward. We hope our new creations at Google will do the same.”

Bump simplified data transfer between devices be they PCs or mobile phones. All one had to do was start the app on both devices and bump them gently against each other to facilitate transfer. It was probably this simplicity of Bump’s products that lead to Google acquiring the company.

Lieb has said that you can export all your data from Bump and Flock till the end of January. All you need to do is fire up either of the apps and follow instructions on exporting your data to get an email with links to all your photos, videos and contacts.
