Google has just hit a jackpot, of sorts. Its patent portfolio got a major boost, after it managed to secure for itself, 217 patents from IBM, reports SEO by the Sea. The current lot of patents from IBM form a mixed bag - several concepts, ranging from -presentation software, blade servers, data caching, server load balancing, network performance, video conferencing, email administration, and instant messaging applications.

However, one benefit that is being specifically spoken about is a tool, which Google will find useful for Google+, reports Mashable. This particular patent will allow Google to use “semantic networks to develop a social network”. The report states that towards the end of 2011, Google secured 188 granted patents and 29 published pending patent applications from IBM. Additionally, considering the rising trend of patent lawsuits, Google for one wants to play safe. Its Android platform has, in the past year, climbed several levels of success within a short span of time, making it significantly susceptible to lawsuits.
