Google Play store surpasses iOS App store in number of app downloads, but still trails in revenue

Google can now boast of 100 percent more downloads than Apple's app store in 2015.

Google can now boast of 100 percent more downloads than Apple's app store in 2015.

App analytics firm App Annie's retrospective report states that Google Play continues to reign when it comes to the app store downloads. In fact, there is a widening gap between downloads on the Play store and Apple's app store.

While Google surpasses Apple in terms of numbers, the search giant is trailing when it comes to monetisation. Though Apple has a smaller market share compared to Google, its users spend more on apps than Android users. Moreover, Apple gets a better cut for apps from its developers than Android developers.

Google Play’s growth was driven by emerging markets such as Brazil, India, Indonesia, Turkey, and Mexico. On the other hand, Apple's app store saw a rise in revenue driven by China, the US and Japan. " China was among the most important contributors as iOS downloads grew 20% from Q4 2014 to Q4 2015 and revenue doubled year over year. Google Play made impressive download share gains in the US, as its share of iOS and Google Play downloads combined surpassed the iOS App Store in 2015," the report adds.

The report further points out an increase in in-app purchases in 2015 as subscription revenue made incredible gains, owing to demand for video, music and dating apps. Mobile games also continue to grow in 2015. Platforms like TV and wearables also present new opportunities for publishers.

It doesn't come as a surprise that Google could quickly surpass Apple in the number of apps and downloads, but hasn't been able to do so when it comes to the revenue. A previous report by App Annie had showed the dominance of Google Play Store over the App Store as far as downloads are concerned. The growth back then was also largely driven by increasing adoption in regions like Mexico, Turkey and Brazil. Back then, App Store had generated about 85 percent more revenue than Google Play. US and China were said to be the major revenue contributors.
