With the rising popularity of Bitcoins, you would think that mainstream technology companies would have already started lining up to get a piece of the action. While that has not happened just yet, Google may be in line to add the cryptocurrency to its Wallet service. According to Forbes, a Pakistan based early-adopter of Bitcoin, Jarar Malik, decided to ask Google if it had any plans to integrate Bitcoins into its payments system, and went on to document his interaction with the company in a Reddit thread.

In a response to his email inquiring whether Google would adopt Bitcoin, the company’s Senior VP, Vic Gundotra said that attention was being paid to the issue. Gundotra, in turn, forwarded Malik’s mail to Google Wallet’s Senior VP, Sridhar Ramaswamy. “Thanks for writing to us,” he wrote, “Really appreciate the feedback. We are working in the payments team to figure out how to incorporate Bitcoin into our plans. [Redacted] or I will be in touch with you when we are a little bit more sure [sic].”   Malik then posted the conversation to Reddit and received general positive feedback. On the back of it, a Google Wallet executive, Ariel Bardin, asked Malik to serve as a moderator on a Google survey with the question “What would I want Google to do with Bitcoin?” Now, while this may seem like the title of a high-school essay, it has managed to elicit responses in huge numbers – 1,726 people and 617 suggestions, along with 22,556, at the time of writing – hinting at the fact that Google users do want to see Bitcoin integration soon.   However, when approached, a Google spokesperson said that the company had no current plans regarding the currency. “As we continue to work on Google Wallet, we’re grateful for a very wide range of suggestions,” a spokesperson said. “While we’re keen to actively engage with Wallet users to help inform and shape the product, there’s no change to our position: we have no current plans regarding Bitcoin.”   While Google is still flip-flopping over its Bitcoin position, the company integrating the cryptocurrency into its Wallet service is a delicious idea, indeed. Time to wait and watch Google’s plans.
