Google explains in a blog that when users are in navigation mode, they need to tap the magnifying glass at the top right corner of the screen, to see a menu of options for places one might need to stop at, like gas stations, grocery stores, or restaurants. If the drop-down options isn't what's required, then one can tap the search icon or use voice commands to search by specific name or category too. Search results include ratings and the estimated amount of time the detour will add to the trip as well.

"Whether you're running an errand in your own backyard or roadtripping through a foreign land, Google Maps helps you get where you’re going, even if you have to make some stops along the way," says Aditya Dhanrajani, Google Maps Product Manager.

The Google My Maps app recently received its first ever major update since 2014 and adds many new features. The update also introduces a new Material Design UI along with a host of other improvements as well. The update is live via Google Play Store for everyone.
