Google Maps adds traffic information to 12 more Indian cities and national highways

The latest update to Google Maps will make traffic information available for all national highways and expressways in India.

The latest update to Google Maps will make traffic information available for all national highways and expressways in India. Drivers and commuters in India will be able to see traffic information for 12 new cities namely, Kolkata, Coimbatore, Lucknow, Surat, Thiruvananthapuram, Indore, Ludhiana, Visakhapatnam, Nagpur, Kochi, Madurai and Bhopal.

This means Google Maps will let users see real time traffic conditions across a total of 34 cities. The traffic feature will be available on both mobile as well as desktop.

On enabling the Traffic layer, commuters will see routes mapped out in different colours – green means no traffic delays on the road, orange indicates medium amount of traffic and red stands for heavier traffic congestion.

“We’re constantly working on making Google Maps a more comprehensive, daily tool for Indians, and we hope that this new real-time traffic information for 12 cities and all national highways will help drivers across the country find the best routes to their destinations with the fewest delays,” said Suren Ruhela, Director, Program Management, Google.

In the Navigation mode, Google Maps will allow real time traffic information and try to accurately estimate your time of arrival and also provide options for alternate faster routes, if any.

It is among the series of updates that Google has been releasing for the Maps. Earlier this year, Google rolled out voice-enabled lane guidance for 20 Indian cities. The feature is available in English and Hindi.
