Google Glass may use Samsung Display's OLED technology

Sources familiar with the development of Google Glass have said that Google will be using Samsung Display’s organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology in its Glass device.

As reported by Korea Times, Google’s top management even okayed a business proposal by Samsung Display recently, to use the latter’s OLED screens on its  Glass.

An executive at one of Samsung Display’s local parts suppliers said_, “Samsung will supply its high-end OLED screens for Google Glass. This is a really big thing because its means that Google shares confidential data with Samsung on its futuristic projects.”_

What’s more, Google has said that its Glass, which is one of its most ambitious projects in recent times, will be launched later this year at the earliest. An official at another partner company said, “Google treats Samsung as a very serious business partner as the latter has proven its capability in its parts-related businesses. The decision will help Samsung further boost its OLED business.”

Interestingly, Samsung Display CEO Kim Ki-nam hinted that the two agreed to work together on Google Glass. In fact, in his keynote speech during the Society for Information Display (SID) forum in Canada, Kim had said, “OLED on silicon may be used for glasses-type, augmented-reality devices much like the Google Glass.”

He even added, “The wearable market will be a major beneficiary of the free-form factor advantage of flexible OLEDs. Smartphone-linked wearable accessory products such as watches and health bands will use ultra-thin flexible OLEDs embedded with various sensors.”
