Google Doodle commemorates birthday of Little Women author Louisa May Alcott

Google celebrated the 184th Birthday of American author and poet Louisa May Alcott. The most famous work by Alcott is Little Women, a popular and timeless book about four sisters living in a hillside home in Massachusetts. Alcott documents some of her own real world experiences living with her sisters in Little Women, with the character Jo based on herself. The Doodle shows the sisters Beth, Jo, Amy and Meg March, with their neighbour and the best friend of Jo, Laurie at the door. Alcott was an activist as well, with a strong sense of civic duty. She was a feminist and took active steps towards abolishing the slave trade in the United States. Her home was a station on the underground railroad that helped smuggle escaped slaves to safety. She campaigned for the right to vote for women, and was the first woman to register a vote in Concord, Massachusetts. Alcott grew up with intellectuals  Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Henry David Thoreau. Alcott served as a volunteer nurse during the American Civil War. She was a prolific writer, despite her activism, and wrote up to fourteen hours a day. Little Women has two sequels written by Alcott, Little Men and Jo’s Boys.
