Google celebrates the 94th birth anniversary of Verghese Kurien, the founder of diary giant Amul, by posting a doodle on its homepage showing the ‘milkman of India’ with a can in his hand along with a buffalo in the picture. The Google Doodle blog stated, “There are few things to give one’s country as sacred and invaluable as nourishment. Today we salute Verghese Kurien, whose ingenuity transformed India’s milk industry and continues to soothe countless stomachs and minds. " Kurien, whos is also known as the ‘Father of the White Revolution’ was also the man behind the creation and success of ‘Amul’ which deals with a multitude of dairy products. He was born on November 26, 1921 in Kozhikode, Kerala, Kurien and graduated from Loyola College in 1940 and later completed his engineering from Guindy College of Engineering, Chennai. Verghese Kurien has successfully set up 30 institutions of excellence (AMUL, GCMMF, IRMA, NDDB) which are owned, controlled by farmers and run by professionals. It is because of him that the daily farming became the country’s largest self-sustaining industry. Kurien also transformed the country and made it self-sufficient in edible oils. Verghese Kurien passed away on September 9, 2012 in Nadiad, Gujarat at the age of 90 years old.
