Google Dictionary Laid to Rest

Google Dictionary is the next Google project to be put down among other services that are being phased out to streamline Google’s web functions. Dictionary was launched in December 2009 and it now displays a message saying that if you want to do a definition search, use Google’s web search, and if you need to translate text, use Google Translate. Google’s integrated Dictionary into its web search, making the presence of a seperate Dictionary page redundant.

There is of course, outcry to this move. A Google Search community manager, Kelly F replied to this outcry saying , “As many of you know, we’ve recently introduced a dictionary tool into Google Web Search to help you quickly look up the definition of a word,. Because the dictionary tool offers the same functionality as Google Dictionary, we’ve decided to discontinue dictionary.google.com.For your definition needs, you can type your query right into the search box and use the dictionary tool located in the left-hand panel on the results page, or you can type [define (your word)> right into the search box.” Are you outraged at the loss of Google Dictionary? Paddy does not, we repeat, definitely does NOT belong in the category of Mac-head (yeh right!). She does get excited by her iPhone and her iMac and her iPod Nano and her Macbook and Bali's iPad and her future iHouse (patent pending). Ok, so maybe her head is a little bit forbidden fruit shaped. She likes shooting video (iPhone 4 camera zindabad!) and editing montages (Final Cut Pro zindabad!), whether the scene calls for it or no. In her spare time, she's either kicking it on stage with KB the keyboard or kicking butt at Taekwondo. see more
