Google plans to combine its renewed online word application, Writely, and its Spreadsheets program to allow users to manage and share documents and spreadsheets on the Web.
A beta version of the service will be launched today, to provide an easy to use product, enabling people to use a variety of file formats for importing and exporting and publish documents and spreadsheets on a Web page or blog. The packaged service will also allow users to collaborate online in real time.
Jonathan Rochelle, product manager for Google Docs & Spreadsheets clarified that the application is not targeting the desktop productivity suite market place, which is dominated by Microsoft Office. Rochelle also said that the service is complementary to desktop products as it lacks certain advanced features of desktop products.
However, it is not clear whether Google intends to include other services into the package, such as Google Calendar, Gmail, SketchUp, Google Talk, Google Maps, and others to create a single packaged service for users.
