Google acquires Israeli startup SlickLogin, maker of sound-based password systems

SlickLogin was founded less than a year ago. The company is based on a novel idea to enable end users to log-in easily into password-protected websites by using a uniquely generated sound.

Google is acquiring SlickLogin, an Israeli startup that develops sound-based password alternatives, in what is being called an "acqui-hiring" deal, which means SlickLogin's staff and knowledge will be integrated into Google. SlickLogin confirmed the deal on its website Sunday.

"Today we're announcing that the SlickLogin team is joining Google," Xinhua quoted the three founders of the young start-up as saying. They added that Google "shares our core beliefs that logging in should be easy instead of frustrating... We couldn't be more excited to join their efforts." No financial details of the transaction were disclosed.

SlickLogin was founded less than a year ago. The company is based on a novel idea to enable end users to log-in easily into password-protected websites by using a uniquely generated sound. The company is yet to launch a commercial product and accrued clients, so the deal actually represents an acquisition of the technology itself.

SlickLogin's acquisition comes at a time when there's already quite a few companies moving in and out of Google's books. The purchase of Nest Labs, which was announced last month, has been completed and soon Google will hand over Motorola operations to Lenovo.

There's no word about how Google could use the tech created by SlickLogin. It could be incorporated into the Android platform along side the existing unlock options. More likely however is the use of the sound-based system for wearables such as Glass, where sound is a more user-friendly option than say inputting a pin. With Glass expected to hit stores in its consumer avatar this year, we could see a new way of unlocking for the device, that's powered by SlickLogin's tech.
