Goodbye Lumia? Microsoft to reportedly kill Lumia line by December

Microsoft has made several attempts to resurrect its Lumia lineup. However, the brand couldn’t form a niche for itself in the competitive smartphone market. The company had tried to revive the lineup with Lumia 950 and 950 XL last year, but the devices failed to impress. Now, citing an employee of Microsoft, a new report points out that the company plans to pull the shutter on the device series by the end of the year.

The report claims that the company plans to end the sale of Lumia devices by December. A GSMArena report has pointed out how the company is offering Lumia devices for lucrative prices every weekend, and speculates it’s a part of the stock clearance plan. The company has started offering ‘buy one and get one’ offers for its Lumia devices, according to reports floating online. The release of Lumia devices have slowed down. We last saw the company’s Lumia 650 Windows 10 smartphone go on sale in India at Rs 15,299 in April.

Lumia being showed the backdoor, puts the long time rumoured Surface Phone to the forefront. News has it that there would be three Surface Phones targetting three different user groups – consumers, business users and enthusiasts. There is no word on the specifications of any of the three Surface Phones, and the pricing is expected to on the lines of higher-end segment. However, some reports expect Surface Phones to surface only in 2017 . Interestingly, the sources suggest the Lumia lineup will be dead by December 2016. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s arch-rival Google is also said to be working on a Google Phone or Pixel Phone or whatever the company plans to call it.
