WhatsApp for iPhone is now free. The company released a new update for the app and made the announcement on its blog as well.
WhatsApp used to cost $0.99 on iOS or Rs 55 in India but the app was free on Google's Android Play Store. Now the app will follow the subscription model as it does on Android. Users who have paid $0.99 as one time payment, will get a lifetime subscription for the app on iOS.
Those who download the free app now will get one year free service and will have to pay $0.99 per year for the subscription just like it works on Android and other platforms.
According to WhatsApp blog the reason for this changeis because, We feel that this model will allow us to become the communications service of the 21st century, and provide you the best way to stay in touch with your friends and family with no ads getting in the way.
iOS users can now also add an option to backup their message history to their iCloud account. To do this, go into Chat Settings on your iPhone, go into 'Chat Backup' and tick on the option to back up your message history. If you reinstall the app, your iPhone prompt you to restore older messages from iCloud during the initialisation process.
WhatsApp has also developed API hooks for iOS developers to make interfacing with WhatsApp easy. More on that here.
