Gmail for iOS updated, lets you open links directly in YouTube, Google Maps, Chrome

The native Gmail client for iOS has been updated to let you open links from your e-mail automatically in Chrome, YouTube and Google Maps. Previously, you could only open such links using Safari.

Moreover, the links you open in Chrome, YouTube or Google Maps will have a Gmail button that will enable you to go back to your mail app quickly. You can choose to enable this new feature and select the default apps for opening links via Gmail’s settings menu.

Keeping it in the family

Gmail for iOS’s sign-in settings have also been changed to let you sign-out of individual accounts. Earlier, if you had multiple accounts on Gmail, you could sign-out of one only by singing out of them all. This has been a long-awaited move on Google’s part.

The sewing together of Google’s bouquet of apps is a commendable move. Apple has not always been very kind to Google, which was clearly demonstrated after the former removed YouTube from the bunch of default apps in iOS 6. Apple also ditched Google Maps on iOS when it launched its own map service. Google has its Maps and YouTube apps on the App Store now and is making optimal use of its suite of apps by letting users connect links to it.
