Gionee S6s vs Oppo F1s: The battle of selfie-focused smartphones

Gionee took the wraps off its new selfie-focused smartphone yesterday priced at Rs 17,999. The spec and price point puts it in direct competition with the Oppo F1s that also focuses on selfies and carries a price tag of Rs 17,990. To make it simpler for selfie lovers, we take a look at both smartphones to see who wins, at least on paper. Design  The Gionee S6s comes with a solid metal design along with a 2.5D curved glass up front. The Oppo F1s sports a metal back and frame. In terms of design, both come across chic-looking, but there isn’t anything exceptional that would set them apart from other existing devices. [caption id=“attachment_330993” align=“aligncenter” width=“640”] ![The image shows Gionee S6s](http://tech.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/gionee-s6s-4.jpg) The image shows Gionee S6s. The back is all metal with a matte finish so the chances of slipping are less.[/caption] Display Gionee’s selfie-focused smartphone sports a 5.5-inch display with a Full HD resolution with Gorilla Glass 3 protection. However, unlike S6s, the Oppo F1s features a 5.5-inch LCD display with a 1280×720 resolution that translates to 267ppi. One usually expects a 1080p resolution on such a large display. On the other hand, it is protected by Gorilla Glass 4. [caption id=“attachment_328164” align=“aligncenter” width=“640”] ![oppo-f1s-1](http://tech.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/oppo-f1s-1.jpg) The image shows Oppo F1s. For a 5.5-inch smartphone, the F1s feels light and manages to fit easily in one hand. It doesn’t slip out easily either thanks to the brushed metal finish.[/caption] Camera One may have found it hard to believe a few years ago, but ardent (and believe us when there are many) selfie lovers now look for the front-camera as a prime feature. These phones have tried to focus on just that. The Gionee packs in an 8MP sensor with an f/2.2 aperture, 5P lens setup and an LED flash for brighter selfies. The F1s gets a whopping 16MP front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture, incorporates the ISOCELL technology, wide-angle lens, along with features like Beautify 4.0 and Full HD recording. Though the front LED flash is missing, Oppo includes a screen flash. With our limited usage time with the S6s ( first impressions ) and the F1s review , both were capable to take decent selfies, but it’s the low light struggle that is faced by both. When it comes to the rear snapper, both Oppo F1s and Gionee S6s come equipped with 13MP sensors. [caption id=“attachment_330994” align=“aligncenter” width=“640”] ![s6s](http://tech.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/gionee-s6s-5.jpg) The Gionee S6s packs in an 8MP sensor with an f/2.2 aperture, 5P lens setup and an LED flash for brighter selfies.[/caption] OS and processor The S6s runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box with a layer of Gionee’s Amigo UI 3.2 on top. The F1s runs Oppo’s ColorOS 3.0 UI layer atop slightly older Android 5.1 Lollipop. The Oppo F1s smartphone is powered by a MediaTek MT6750 SoC which has an octa-core processor consisting of four Cortex-A53 cores with a clock rate of 1.5GHz and the rest four Cortex-A53 cores with a clock rate of 1.0GHz. It is coupled with 3GB of RAM and Mali-T860 GPU handles the graphics. Gionee S6s is powered by MediaTek MT6753 SoC with an octa-core processor, a 64-bit processor clocked at 1.3GHz. It is paired with 3GB of RAM and a Mali-T720 GPU. Storage and connectivity The Gionee specs sheet includes 32GB of internal memory, expandable via microSD card up to 128GB. In terms of connectivity, it supports LTE, VoLTE, dual-SIM dual standby, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB OTG and GPS standards. The Oppo F1s also gets internal storage of 32GB that is expandable using a microSD card. The connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, microUSB, GPS/A-GPS, 4G LTE along with VoLTE support. ![oppo-f1s-3](http://tech.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/oppo-f1s-3.jpg) Battery Gionee S6s is fuelled by a 3,150mAh battery which sounds pretty decent. Oppo falls back slightly with its F1s coming equipped with a 3,075mAh battery.

Conclusion In terms of specs, the Gionee S6s’ sheet doesn’t speak volumes but offers decent overall specs that are a tad better than the F1s. It has better display resolution, battery and runs the latest iteration of the OS. However, if you are specifically looking for a selfie device, F1s is better equipped with a 16MP sensor compared to Gionee’s 8MP. While that’s on paper, in the limited time we spent with the S6s (check out our first impressions ), we felt that the colours look good on the display, although low light selfies seem to be getting soft. We will have to await the post-review test results of the Gionee S6s to give a verdict on which of these two makes for a better value proposition.
