Games on Kickstarter have raised more than $100 million so far

Kickstarter campaigns have been very popular for games since last year when Tim Schafer decided to use the crowdfunding platform to fund his upcoming point-and click adventure game. Kickstarter has announced on its blog that the money pledged to games on Kickstarter has crossed the $100 million milestone.

The total number of successful game projects from Kickstarter have been 1,476 and the total number of backers has been 633,242. The year 2012 has been the biggest for games on Kickstarter, with pledges totalling up to more than $83 million.

Kickstarter has raised more than $100 million for games

One of the most popular Kickstarter campaigns so far has been the open-source $99 Ouya console, which is set to begin shipping in June. For games, the popular ones that are still in development include Obsidian’s Project Eternity, Double Fine Adventure and Richard Garriot’s Shroud of the Avatar.

Obsidian’s Project Eternity was revealed back in October to have been the most funded game on Kickstarter. The game raised around $3.4 million on Kickstarter and over $100,000 through PayPal. Project Eternity has surpassed all the other big games that were funded through Kickstarter, which includes games such as Tim Schafer’s Double Fine Adventure, which raised $3.3 million approximately; and Brian Fargo’s Wasteland 2, which raised around $2.9 million. The Ouya console has surpassed all these games having raised $8.5 million, but it is not a game.

Recently, the Kickstarter campaign for Richard Garriott’s spiritual successor to the Ultima series—dubbed Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues—had met its goals. In light of this, the team had announced stretch goals for the game, which would decide what additional features would make it to the game if enough money was raised.

After reaching $1.1 million, the developers will add a pet system into the game. There will be both social vanity pets as well as combat pets that will help you in your adventures. The pets will be controllable through simple commands. Reaching $1.2 million will have the developers add a seasonal weather system into the game. This means that weather will be dynamic and will depend on the in-game calendar. There will be more stretch goals announced later.

Ever heard of one of those people who just never seem to shut up about something? Shunal is like the nerd equivalent of that guy. Believe us when we say that he can go on talking about games and smartphones for hours on end. We do manage to find some insight in his insane ramblings though, and through his moronic facade, he does seem to know more than he lets on. Sadly enough, it always ends up being about gaming with him. Or stupid, stupid puns. see more
