Games of January 2011

January is a cold month, as far as both the weather and video game releases are concerned. It’s a time when people have barely recovered from the “holiday mode”, so you don’t have a bunch of games lining up for release. This January, however, surprisingly has quite a few interesting titles in the pipelines and here are the best of the litter.

Dead Space 2 (Xbox360 PS3 PC) - 25th January

Space does have its advantages

Taking a cue from cult classics like Event Horizon and Doom, Dead Space was a stellar and horrific romp through space fusing action, horror and all out gore perfectly. You played as Isaac Clarke, an engineer who finds himself on a derelict spaceship infected with all sorts of unpleasant alien life forms. Using unconventional weaponry forged from the tools of his trade, Isaac fought his way to safety. Dead Space 2 fast forwards to three years later and players find out that Isaac’s so called safe haven has been run over by the Necromorph invasion – once again. While core gameplay remains the same, expect newer monsters, weapons and a brand new multiplayer mode which we’re hoping won’t totally suck.

LittleBigPlanet 2 (PS3) - 19th January

_One happy, adorable family
_

Bringing even more cuteness your way, LittleBigPlanet 2 (LBP) is back with the sack gang and their shenanigans. The game plays out like its predecessor which, in case you missed out on it, was an adorable platformer that also let players create their very own levels. Due to this, the game’s shelf life increased drastically as the community came up with thousands of entertaining levels, all of which were free to download. Now with LBP 2, players can actually create genre specific levels which means you can forge anything from a first person shooter to a racing game to a platformer - within a platformer. Yeah, some Inception sh*t going down in here.

Nash, as he prefers being called, woke up to the wonders of gaming rather late but don't bring that up around him. It's a touchy subject. A self confessed Battlefield veteran, Nash spent a good part of 2010 on the Steam Battlefield - with Bad Company (see what we did there?). He has a zero tolerance policy towards RTS games but is currently showing an interest by picking up and moving people - who he refers to as units - in the office. Thank God he's not that enthusiastic about Angry Birds or we'd be seeing women flying all over the place. Bali... Bali, put the receptionist down now. see more
