Foursquare plans a makeover next week

Foursquare, the service that lets you check-in to places to let your friends know where you are as well as make you a mayor without having a political career is getting a massive overhaul next week. The service has been teasing their makeover on Twitter over the last few days, using the hashtag #AllNew4sq to get users excited. Foursquare has also tweeted pictures of the goodies that are to come. For one, Foursquare is adding more emphasis to their Explore function. This function, after the update, will essentially allow users to find new places to check into based on their existing check ins. It will alsoallow users to find local deals based on their existing check ins. The Explore function will also make heavier use of maps, showing users a personalized map of what’s hot in their area. The app will also allow merchants to buy placements for their products. This might be just like Facebook’s Highlighted Posts that is currently in testing.

Will you use an all new Foursquare?

Will you use an all new Foursquare?

According to TechCrunch, Dennis Crowley, the founder of Foursquare says that users are actively checking in less and using the app to explore places more. It seems that Foursquare is offering a service similar to that of Google Places and Yelp. Foursquare constantly monitors their users’ activities and looks to adapt itself to what its user base wants. The service started in 2009 and has amassed 20 million users, since launch with over 2 billion check ins. However, Crowley says that users seem to be using less of the original function that Foursquare offered, which worked on the basis of rewarding users for showing a vendor loyalty. While Foursquare in India didn’t seem to catch on because not too many vendors adopted a rewarding system for Foursquare loyalty, the Explore function might work for users here to discover new places.
