Four Vine films that won at the Tribeca Film Festival

The Tribeca Film Festival’s Online fest has found its winners in multiple categories for 2013 and more importantly, in a newer-before seen one – the six second Vine film category. While some directors take hours and hours to tell a visual story, entrants from the #6secfilm category used Twitter’s short video creating app Vine to create successfully display super-short films on the festival’s site.

Last month, the editors at the Tribeca film festival put out a new category involving the fledgling iOS app, Vine. “When the Vine app launched in January, we got excited about it immediately. The mobile app that lets anyone make six-second looping films felt fresh and challenging, and we were thrilled when some of our favorite artists started using Vine in creative ways. So that gave us an idea: why not challenge Vine users to create six-second films for our own mini festival just for Vines?” the editors wrote.

Four hundred entries later, the editors managed to sift through the lot and shortlist 40 Vine videos earlier this month. Stories were judged on the basis that they had to have a beginning, a middle and an end. They were divided into four categories – Auteur, Animate, Genre and Series.

The Auteur category expected some truly unique films. “A tiny, concentrated expression of the filmmaker’s vision,” was how Tribeca described this category. It saw some of the most interesting films like how to make Pink Floyd’s “Money” using baby toys, and a truly touching one where a family coming back from a funeral removes a sticker depicting the deceased from a family of stickers from a car. But the winner of the category was called “There is no sunny side to this story” that showed an action figure toy shooting a bunch of eggs.. Check it out here.

The Animate category was described as one that was for “filmmakers who saw Vine as the perfect medium for some creative animation and don’t want to deal with the live-action riffraff." After having gone through some very interesting stop-motion videos that were on the shortlist, the video selected as the winning one was “How to clear your garage of a scary ghost". The Genre category included everything from sci-fi Vines, western Vines, LOLcat Vines and comedy Vines. The winner, though, was from the Horror Genre. Check it out here.

The Series category allowed Vine users to go beyond one Vine and create a trilogy that tell one story. The winner from this category told a story of a book beetle. Watch it here.

If nothing, the Tribeca Film Festival has proved that there is a market for films as short a six seconds. It might be an interesting concept to have a very restricted time limit where film-makers can use the looping format of Vine to a great effect. While everyone has access to Twitter’s iOS offering Vine, it may not be everyone’s cup of tea to be able to creatively mash up an entire story in such a short amount of time. Meanwhile, you can check the entire shortlist of Vine winners if you’re bored at lunch time – here.
