Food discovery app
Burpple, which can be called a mix of Instagram, Path and Pinterest, has finally made its way to Android.
Earlier available only for iOS devices through the Apple App Store, Burpple has landed on Google Play today with several recently-launched features, including ‘explore’. The Android version of the app is currently in public beta.
Burpple is the product of a Singapore-based startup and is best known for connecting food lovers from around the world by way of image sharing. Burpple says that the app has already seen 300,000 food moments shared from over 140 countries and 4,000 cities. These food moments include Foursquare-esque check-in functionality at eateries as well as personal moments—a diary-like feature that you can maintain about your visits to restaurants.
Now on Android!
While most people still use Instagram to share photo-filtered images of what they had for lunch, Burpple adds features like place, time, a small space for you to mention your experience, and even categorise the experience. Categories, or ‘boxes’ as Burpple calls it, are a nice way to classify the food you’ve had; you get categories like special occasions, healthy food and value for money.
You can always go back and curate the boards on which the images are tacked, making Burpple kind of like a Pinterest for food. The app remembers when the image was taken, so you can backdate your culinary journey by days and months to fill up your albums.
The Android app is designed quite like its earlier iOS avatar, although the company has made sure it doesn’t look alien on your Android phone by dressing it up in Ice Cream Sandwich clothes. The app is available for Android version 2.2 and up, with its ICS look only lending a sleek feel to it.
“We’ve been working tirelessly to make this new Android app to share and discover all your food moments in one place,” said Burpple co-founder Dixon Chan. “Today, we release Burpple for Android as a public beta for everyone to test and enjoy.”
Sure, the app has taken very long to get to Android, but it’s the success Burpple has had with iOS that made the Android launch something a lot of users have been looking forward to. One could draw parallels between Instagram’s success story and Burpple’s fledgling growth, but the newer app currently remains in beta mode and seems to be taking it slow.
“For all our Burpple users, this is a big step forward for the community as a whole,” said Chan. “When we started working on Burpple, we dreamed of a world connected by food experiences. With the release of Burpple for Android, we’re one step closer to making that goal a reality.”
Burrple has had the fortune of being an ideal growing app. The Singapore-based company won $500,000 in seed funding for being one of the Top 10 Startups in Asia, at the Open Web Asia 2012 held in Haikou, China in December 2012.
