Flipkart to sell its own tablets branded DigiFlip: Report

With Amazon.com ramping up its presence in India, Flipkart has been crafting a counter strike to its  every move . From  one-day delivery  to buying apparel maker  Myntra , the popular Indian e-retailer has done it all. In its latest move, the company is believed to be working on its own brand of tablets. According to a report by  The Economic Times , Flipkart is busy adding finishing touches on its own brand of tablets labelled DigiFlip.   The tablet is expected to be available via its own portal and is expected ’to boost margins for the company’ in the retailing space, the report adds. The DigiFlip brand was launched  in 2012. Flipkart has reportedly already sold a range of electronic and computer accessories like headphones, speakers and pen drives with DigiFlip label. Most products sold under DigiFlip brand have been sourced  from OEMs in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea and India, adds the report. However, experts believe that the fierce tablet-market is quite different from headphones or speakers. Its arch-rival Amazon - who recently slashed the prices of its tablets in India - has started looking beyond Kindle and shifting its focuss on  smartphones . In fact, a rumour had hinted at a  Flipkart-branded smartphone  too, however, there has been  no show yet.   In May 2014,  an IDC report  had suggested tablets have hit a road-block in terms of sales, a fact also borne out by  the Mary Meeker Internet Trends report.   The latest survey shows a sharp decline in tablet sales after a considerable growth of 51.8 percent in 2013. In 2014, the tablet shipments are expected to grow by only 12.1 percent due to the invasion of a new category of smartphones known as phablets, a cross between a tablet and a phone. These devices offer large displays similar to tablets, but have better cameras and are easier to carry around.     The high-end tablet market is dominated by  Apple , followed by Samsung.  The low end market is dominated by budget Android tablets. However, reports have been suggesting a stagnancy in tablet sales due to a glut in the market and technology.
