Flipkart finally launches native iOS app

Indian online retailer Flipkart has finally launched a native app for iOS. The company was last in the news when it launched an app for Android users back in September. The interface of both the iOS and the Android version seem remarkably similar and we decided to take a look to see how Flipkart works on iOS.

The e-tailer has tried keeping the desktop experience intact with its new mobile app. The interface comes with all products under “Shop by Departments”, which comes with options like fashion & accessories, electronics & appliances, books & entertainments as well as kids & baby care. The Android version is identical. An icon on the upper right corner pulls out all the categories in the form of a list.

Users can filter out search results and sort out products based on popularity, pricing, brands, discount and even relevance. The homescreen of the app has clear sections for “Big discounts” and what’s “Hot on Flipkart”. One notable difference between the Android and iOS app is the lack of pinch and zoom gesture support in the latter. The company, however, has integrated a zoom feature for product images. You will even get a quick list right at the bottom which showcases all your recently viewed items via the mobile app. Also packed in are ratings and reviews of products for users to make informed choices.

Prospective buyers can opt for picking up products on-the-go as almost all the payment options seen in the web version like Cash on Delivery, card payments, EMI options and netbanking are supported here. You can also track your orders directly from your iPhone or iPad and access your existing Flipkart account and saved user details. Users can also share links of interesting products with friends through social networking sites like Facebook or Google+ or send the URL through SMS or mail. The Android app has direct integration of SMS, Gmail, Twitter and other services in the sharing menu. There also doesn’t seem to be support for voice search and barcode scanning. The app is now available for download on the official app store.
