Flipboard now lets you add shopping catalogues to magazines

Just in time to take advantage of the holiday season, Flipboard is announced that it will now allow users to create their own catalogue on the service. In a move that will cause a spot of bother for Pinterest, Flipboard is extending its image-rich service for discovering, collecting and buying products on the service via catalogues.

In a blog post announcing the brand-new feature, the Flipboard team called it the “official launch of shopping on Flipboard”. There’s a new Shopping category you will now find in the content guide. To start users off, Flipboard is making ten catalogues curated by the team itself available in it. Besides catalogues like “Modern Man” “Home Sweet Home” and more, Flipboard is also unveiling shoppable brand magazines from Banana Republic, Birch Box and More.

The team says that celebrities like Sara Evans, Alyssa Milano and more, as well as publishers like InStyle and The Verge are also posting catalogues already. You can start adding to your catalogue with a bookmarklet extension you can add to your browsers. When you flip a product into your magazine, most products will display a price, indicating o your readers that it is up for purchase. They can then click on it and head on to the website to purchase it. You can mix products with articles, photos, videos and audio from SoundCloud, creating a catalogue with a story, the team writes.

This seems like a great new addition to a service that is already doing wonders with itself. Ever since Flipboard 2.0, which allowed users to create their own magazines, the service has seen a surge in users as well as user-generated content. The service boasts of 90 million users now, a five million increase from the last reported head count. The purchaseable feature will also pose as a tough competition to Pinterest, which acts as a virtual pinboard, mainly for items that can be purchased. While the contest between these services will be interesting to see, it will give users some very delicious options to choose from.
