Five Mobile Concepts You Need to See

Are you bored of seeing the same kind of phones over and over again? I mean there aren’t many apart from touchscreens, flip phones, QWERTY handsets or slider phones. Every once a while though, we have new concepts coming out, which gives us a vague idea of what to expect from the future.

We have a few such phones for your eyes only and although most of them won’t end up in your hands, some ideas could very well be implemented. Let’s check them out.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Nokia Kinetic
The Kinetic is a concept design by Jeremy Innes-Hopkins for a fun Nokia handset. The curve behind not only gives the phone a unique look, but it also has a certain function of its own. When getting a call, the Kinetic can stand up, thereby alerting the user of an incoming call.  Basically, it is supposed to convert digital information to kinetic energy and hence the name.

I personally like the design and idea, but it’s hard to imagine how will it actually function when on a bed, sofa or some other soft surface? Anyway, if you don’t want the Smartphone to remain standing while it’s up, you can gently push it to go back to normal position.

A neat design for sure…

Three-Sided Flip Phone**
So I wasn’t very impressed with the Motorola Flipout but that doesn’t dent my feelings for a flip phone. The very basic movement of a keypad sliding out is bound to catch the eye. Here’s a three-sided flip phone that flips both ways (or is that three ways?).

That’s creativity!

The design by Kristian Urik Larsen has three AMOLED touch panels with a keyboard inside! The phone you’ll see in the video below is supposed to be running some flavour of Android and does it look super cool! This smartphone is not all about looks, as you can see there are various things that will captivate you nonetheless. The transfer of a file between two of these smartphones was what impressed me.

Mozilla Seabird
** Mozilla Labs have designed this really cool phone called the Seabird which looks quite similar to the Nokia Kinetic (upside down) but has very different features. Apart from an 8 Megapixel snapper, the smartphone has a projector that can project at 45 lumens. There’s also a Bluetooth headset with haptic clicking, that fits in and doubles up as a wireless presentation remote control!

While the pictures look great, you have to check out the video below which shows off the Seabird in all its glory. Not only does it project multimedia but also the interface through which a user can interact with the smartphone.

Bio Flip Phone
A concept by Miyazawa Tetsu & Ichimura Shigoreni, the Bio phone is a “living” phone of sorts. Well, don’t expect it to walk around searching for a charging port or something; rather, the phone has a series of layers or leafs which you open up for various functions. Like if you’re getting a call or text message, the first flap folds up like a dog-eared book indicating an incoming call.

To make call, turn page…

To make call, turn page…

Below the “dialer” layer, the user has access to a screen layer that lets them browse the web, watch movies and so on. While doing so, Bio Phone understands that you’re using the last layer and the previous flaps will tighten up like a page using actuators that detect and sense your activity. Sorry, no videos for this one!

 Traccia Phone
We’ve seen some innovative phones, so let’s move onto a more simpler design, Something that we’ve all used at some point in our lives, a pen. You got that right, the Traccia phone by Andrea Ponti is designed like a pen and what’s cool is that you use it as a pen too.

Snazzy button placement

Snazzy button placement

So what’s the deal with this phone? The Traccia phone is supposed to have an embedded optical sensor to detect your movements. So, if you write down something, it converts it into text and so your message is being formed as your write! If you want to check contacts, you can do so by drawing shapes. Now it all sounds good and the Traccia has a camera as well, but the bummer about this is you might not find easy to play Snake!

So these were our entries for some neat concepts for mobile phones. We would definitely love to see these phones come to life someday or the other. Which of these phones do you want to flaunt?
