First Tizen tablet launched in Japan, aimed at developers

Tizen, the Linux-based operating system for mobile devices, is back in the news, this time with word about a new tablet that is out in the Japanese market. The OS, which is being back by companies like Samsung and Intel, is now being seen in a brand new device aimed at developers, according to a release from Tizen Indonesia. There has not been any word from the company about this new tablet being available in any other market for now.

The ultimate goal, according to the report, is to come up with a device that developers can use to ready apps for the alternative operating system. That being said, the current Tizen build kit, coming from Systena, seems to be a pretty decent deal.

According to an unconfirmed translation by Liliputing, the new tablet comes with a 10.1-inch display sporting a resolution of 1920x1200 pixels. Internally, the device will come with an ARM Cortex-A9 quad-core processor clocked at 1.4GHz coupled with 2GB of RAM. The device will provide users with 32GB of internal memory which can be expanded via a microSD card slot. In terms of connectivity, the device comes with Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0. The tablet also comes with front and rear camera, although the specifications of the same have not been detailed at this time.

The tablet will be packed with Tizen 2.1 Magnolia that is specifically built for app development and product demonstration. This basically means that people who do get their hands on one of these devices will get access to the source code and documentation for writing apps for the platform. There has not been any word about the pricing of this kit but interested developers can get more information through on the Systena website.

Over all, this move suggests that the Samsung-backed OS may be seen on other mobile platforms soon, specifically smartphones. That being said, rumours of such a device coming has been circulating for a while now. There is no word from the company about when a Tizen-powered smartphone will be hitting the market, though, so for now, it looks like we will just have to wait and watch.
