 "First impressions: Nokia Lumia 1020")
Nokia announced the Lumia 1020 for India yesterday. Post the event we had a little hands on time with the Windows Phone 8 device and here are some quick first impressions.
Build Quality
The Nokia Lumia 1020 looks like a spitting image of the generation older Lumia 920 when seen from the front. It has the same 4.5-inch touchscreen with a ClearBlack display. The only differentiation is the black circular section housing the PureView 41MP sensor sporting camera on the rear side. The build quality is good and it feels quite sturdy. The Lumia 1020 measures 10.4mm thick which isn’t really slim by today’s standard and weighs in at 158 grams. So it’s not exactly the thinnest or the lightest phones around, but that is expected thanks to a considerable space being occupied by the camera section.
The left edge of the phone is clean and all the buttons are located on the right hand side. The volume rocker comes first, followed by the power/standby button and finally the shutter button for the camera. These buttons are protrude out of the plane of the phone’s body thereby ensuring decent feedback when pressed. On the top you have the headphone jack, while the micro USB charging port is on the lower edge.
Features
The 1020 has the Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8960 SoC ticking inside, with a dual-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz and 2GB of RAM. This is the same SoC that we saw in the Lumia 920. It comes with 16GB or 32GB of internal storage and there’s no micro SD card slot. The PureView camera has a 41MP sensor and you can capture high res images at 38MP (aspect ratio 3:2) and 34MP (aspect ratio 16:9) whereas a 5MP image is always captured. You can set the camera to capture both a high res and a low res image. You can only share the 5MP images over social networks.
Accessories
Since the main highlight of the Lumia 1020 is its camera, Nokia have decided to make a camera grip cover to be sold at an MRP of Rs 7,500 which also has a shutter button. It looks good and is a valuable accessory if you want to use the 1020 as a camera primarily. It will also sell a wireless charging shell for an MRP of Rs 3,500.

Pricing
Nokia surprisingly did not reveal the Indian pricing of the Lumia 1020. They said it would be announced on October 10th. (To get a rough idea, it sells in the US for $800 which comes to around Rs 49,600 at current rates)
