Amazon has released an OTA update for the first-gen Kindle Paperwhite that adds some of the much-love features from the second-gen Paperwhite.
The biggest change is Goodreads integration, which was long-rumoured to be coming for the older e-reader. In a post announcing the integration, Goodreads said, “We want Goodreads on the original Kindle Paperwhite, too!" was the cri du coeur in November when we first launched Goodreads on the new Kindle Paperwhite. For all of you who asked, your time is now!”
Goodreads will now be available on both models of Amazon Kindle Paperwhite in the US, Canada, and Australia. The service lets you can classify your book collection, share these shelves with friends, look for recommendations and post excerpts from current reads. Goodreads will be made available for free through an over-the-air upgrade in the coming weeks, according tot the company. Another neat addition is the presence of footnotes in-line, without spilling over to a new page.
Other changes include the parental control feature FreeTime that can make separate profiles for children and also monitor their reading habits or progress. First-gen Paperwhite also get Cloud Collections which lets you sort out your collection of books, and a few more features that really wowed us in the second-gen Paperwhite . These include Page Flip, which lets you skim through the book, without losing your current page. Users will also get the dictionary feature along with support for Wikipedia and X-Ray look-up, which shows you definitions and contexts of chosen words or phrases and adds them to the Vocabulary Builder.
