When Facebook, along with Ericsson and Qualcomm, released a white paper as part of Internet.org yesterday, it gave details for more than just how to bring the world online. In one section, the social networking website – the leading technology company in Internet.org – revealed that it has seen a quarter of a trillion photo uploads by users since the launch of the site.
The fact that uploading photos on Facebook is the global passtime is no secret; the amount is staggering, though. The website wrote that it is seeing 350 million photo uploads daily from its strong user base of 1.15 billion users and in all, Facebook users have uploaded 250 billion photos since the site came into existence.
Facebook users uploading pictures by the millions daily
Now here’s the interesting bit: The photographs are not even the most traffic generating aspect of Facebook, despite the millions of uploads daily. Facebook says that users share 4.75 billion “content items” per day and that includes 4.5 billion Likes, and 10 billion messages.
Compare it to Instagram and it’s noticeable how far behind Facebook’s acquisition still is, despite it being a photo-centric application. According to The Verge , Instagram sees 55 million uploads a day and has a total of 16 billion uploads. It still has a long way to go before it catches up with the big daddy, Facebook.
Facebook has gone on to redefine the way images are handled on social networking websites. With auto-tagging features, shared albums and sharing features being actively explored by users, it is not hard to believe that Facebook images are crunching numbers in billions already.
