Facebook, Unity launch joint SDK bringing social features to Unity games

Facebook and Unity have joined forces to create a cross-platform SDK for games based on the ever-popular Unity Engine. This essentially allows faster and easier integration of Facebook in Unity-based games. The SDK works on iOS, Android and web. Some of the games already making use of the new SDK are Cmune’s UberStrike, Madfinger’s Shadowgun: Deadzone and Nival’s King’s Bounty: Legions.

According to Facebook, the SDK includes native Unity dialogs for inviting friends, requests and sharing. This allows users to continue playing their games in full-screen mode even when using social features. “We knew a lot of gamers on the web were playing in full-screen mode, we knew that our support for full-screen on Canvas was not very good,” says George Lee, Product Manager at Facebook, according to Gamasutra .

Facebook wants to make its games relevant again

“The number of active Facebook users with Unity installed more than tripled in the first half of 2013, and today more than 90 million monthly active users have Unity installed on the web,” said Facebook’s Aaron Brady in a statement . “Facebook has a relevant and engaged audience of gamers that mobile developers can reach by publishing their games on Facebook, and the SDK makes bringing a mobile game to web as simple as writing one line of code.”

One of the key features of the new joint-SDK makes the Unity engine itself easier to handle for the average Facebook user. This essentially includes user-friendly dialogue boxes when installing Unity-based games. It shouldn’t take too long till we start seeing more and more Facebook games that run on Unity and use the new joint SDK.

Ever heard of one of those people who just never seem to shut up about something? Shunal is like the nerd equivalent of that guy. Believe us when we say that he can go on talking about games and smartphones for hours on end. We do manage to find some insight in his insane ramblings though, and through his moronic facade, he does seem to know more than he lets on. Sadly enough, it always ends up being about gaming with him. Or stupid, stupid puns.
