Tired of Facebook’s many redesigns already? Wait..there’s more. Facebook is hosting an event on March 7, 2013, and courtesy an invite, it has let it out that it will show off a new look of its News Feed at the event.
At the moment, there is nothing more on Facebook’s plans for March 7, but a new look for News Feed does say a lot. The earliest tweak to the News Feed was back in the September of 2011. The aim of the change was to make sure that users don’t miss the important highlights in their friends’ lives. Then in November that year, Facebook added yet another update to their News Feed. They added a ‘Sort’ button, which allows you to choose whether they’d like to see highlighted stories first or recent stories first. The way in which Facebook works right now, involves it pushing highlighted stories first. If you’re one of the many that protested against this feature, you now have the option to sort your stories from most recent backwards.The News Feed, even if you set it in reverse chronological order, will in no way be as comprehensive as the Ticker. Facebook previously had ‘Top Stories’ and ‘Recent Stories’ tabs on the top of the News Feed page and this update brings users closer to that set up.
New news feed coming up
Earlier last month, there were reports about Facebook reportedly testing a new option for the news feed that would enable subjects of the pages users may have “liked” previously to appear under a new section: “Recent Articles about”. So based on the pages that users may have “liked” in the past, the news feed will vary with content that is useful, or be clogged with even more random data.
For those who haven’t noticed yet, the news feed already has a Trending Articles option. However, there is quite some difference between Articles Related to and Trending Articles. The latter comprises of articles that have been gaining interest and can be about anything. Articles Related to, on the other hand, are topics that a user has already expressed an interest in.
Facebook is reportedly testing a new single-column Timeline design for its users in New Zealand. The new design, of which they have a screenshot, shows that the “About” section has been pushed to the left-hand side of the page and Status updates, and other shared posts has been moved to the right-hand side of the page. That apart, the name of the user has been shifted too - to be made one with the cover photo and is written in white.
Moving on, if you look at the top of the page, you will notice that the icons for message, friend requests and other notifications have been moved to the right-hand side of the blue strip, while the name of the user has been moved to the left.
If you go and check out how your profile page looks currently, you’ll notice that it has been divided vertically - with the space for status updates, and other posts to the left and the friends lists, photo albums and likes, among other things to the right. So in practice, if the new design is rolled out uniformly, the columns would have switched sides.
