It looks like Facebook as well as Instagram were down for a majority of the users around the world. We tried logging into Facebook and were greeted with this message seen above. Facebook and Instagram were not accessible on the web as well as mobile platforms. Facebook hasn’t released any communication as to what has caused the outage which occured around 1.10am ET or around 11.40am IST. A lot of users also reported about Tinder, AOL Instant Messenger and Hipchat also being down. According to iPViking, we are seeing large amounts of online denial of service attack traffic which is directed towards IP addresses in the US, possibly the Facebook and Instagram servers in the US. The site shows a live infograph of what seems like attacks from countries such as China, Brazil, United States itself, Russia and more. Instagram had acknowledged the issue saying that it is working on a fix to look after the issue as well.
Hacker Group Lizard Squad has tweeted out the following tweet, increasing the speculation that it may have been behind the denial-of service attack.
A quick look at Twitter and you will find a lot of tweets addressing the issue. It is quite a surprise that Twitter hasn’t shown a Failwhale logo yet. It is handling the number of tweets with the #FacebookIsDown quite well. Needless to say #Facebookisdown is the no. 1 trend Worldwide.

Unless that goes down too.
Facebook and Instagram are down. Which is interesting because they are on the same grounds. That's a massive outage.
