Facebook Messenger to get secret conversations, in-store payments: Report

Hidden code in Facebook's Messenger seems to indicate that secret conversations and in-store payment options are coming to the platform.

Facebook's ambition of adding retail-related features isn't a secret. The company is known for testing a 'buy button' and also for working on a virtual assistant who can help with these purchases.

The Information has now got its hands on code in the iPhone version of Facebook's Messenger that hints at new chat and in-store payment options. If this is true, then Facebook Messenger may be getting some exciting new features very soon.

Going by the report, Facebook Messenger plans a feature that will allow users to buy things from stores. This means that you could pay from directly within the Messenger. Now the reports around testing the buy button, experimenting with an in-store payment option all makes sense.  In January, Zuckerberg did mention that he wouldn't mind teaming up with Apple Pay and similar services. But it now looks like Facebook may introduce its own payment option. This would also mean the company will be ready to compete with Apple Pay, Android Pay and so on. But for now, take this with a pinch of salt.

Then there's also the 'secret conversations' feature that was spotted. This could be related to encrypted chats, which has been introduced for apps like Telegraph and even Facebook-owned WhatsApp. It may also mean the hiding of chat messages in select devices. The report doesn't clearly mention anything.

The code also hints at some other features, such as calendar sync for events, sharing quotes from articles and updates among only a select group of friends.
