Email, IM Now on Regular Mobile Phones

Mobile email solutions provider, Berggi, has unveiled a new technology, which will allow mobile phone users to send and receive their email and access Instant Messaging (IM) services on their regular mobile handsets.

Berggi says the new technology is aimed at the average consumer and enables access to email from multiple accounts and instant messaging via Yahoo!, AIM, MSN and Google Talk. Consumers can use their current handsets, without creating a new account or data plan, at $9.99 per month. The mobile email and IM service will be billed along with the telephone charges and consumers may cancel the service any time without penalty.

David Passmore, Research Director at the Burton Group said, “Berggi has come up with a novel approach to bringing the promise of BlackBerry and Treo — functional and practical mobile messaging, to the masses. By focusing on delivering high-value services over commodity phones, and by teaming with consumer brands to bring these services to market, Berggi may have found a way to make mobile messaging a mass-market play.”

The Berggi service is accessed by downloading a ’thick client’, which aims to provide consumers with an optimized environment for mobile emailing and IM. This service will be available to consumers on November 23.
