Clicking selfies is the past. Clicking Belfies could be a tad weird. But in 2015, we have entered the era of video selfies!
Dubsmash, an app allows users to combine selfie videos with famous quotes. Users pick an audio quote which could range from a movie or even a song, and can then film a video of themselves lip-syncing to it.
Tech Crunch reported that Dubsmash founders Jonas Drüppel, Roland Grenke and Daniel Taschik had failed to conquer the iOS app store twice before, but even they couldn’t have predicted that they had a smashing hit on their hands. Within seven days of its launch on November 19t 2014, the app reached the number one spot in their home country of Germany, followed by 29 other countries soon after.
Lesser known fact is that this was the company’s third attempt at an app since mid-2013. The three founders had initially met at a hackathon in Berlin the previous year.
The quotes are taken from a variety of sources, including TV shows, movies and songs. It’s as simple as selecting a quote you like and then recording a short video of yourself. The app organises quotes in various folders that relate to the theme that you’re looking for, and it also includes a list of the trending, most popular clips.
Once recorded, users can save their ‘Dubsmash’ to their photo gallery and then share it via social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp.
The report further stated that their next update will include ‘Soundboards’ - a better way to organize sounds, and allows users to create their own boards and to subscribe to other users’ boards.
The app is currently available for iOS and Android.
