Drop test shows iPad mini tougher than 3rd gen iPad, Nexus 7

The iPad mini and the Nexus 7 are arguably the hottest tablets currently available on the market. The iPad 3rd generation, though old, is still quite popular. It has been recently replaced by the 4th generation iPad. So, if one wants to know which of these is the toughest, a recent video has surfaced, which pits the three against each other to see their sturdiness.

From the video, we can see that the three devices are handled by a machine, and dropped at the same time from the same height. There are three tests in all, carried out by a protection plan provider, Square Trade.

In the first test, every tablet was dropped on its corner; in the second, it was made to land on its face. In the third, it was dunked under water for 10 seconds.

In the first test, the iPad mini came out the least unscathed with only minor aesthetic aberrations, with no cracks visible on the screen. The Nexus 7 did have some cracks, but looked a lot better than the full sized iPad, which suffered the most in the corner drop test.

In the second test, the Nexus 7 did the best, and had only minor cracks, while the iPad mini was left worse for wear, and so was the third generation iPad, which suffered the most amount of damage.

In the third test, the three tablets are dunked in water for 10 seconds and upon removal, the iPad mini fares the best, as it works properly without any issues. The regular sized iPad faced issues with the home button after being submerged in water, while the Nexus 7 was declared unresponsive by the tester.

The iPad mini was awarded as the winner in the series of tests.

Though this video is informative, and we can see which tablet is the more rugged of the three, a lot depends on the situation in which the tablets are present in the real world.

The iPad mini has an aluminium and glass design 7.2mm thick, and weighs only 0.68 pounds. As per an official statement by Apple, the iPad mini has 35 percent more screen real estate than 7-inch tablets, and up to 67 percent more usable viewing area when browsing the web. The dual-core A5 chip on the iPad mini allows for responsive graphics and a multi-touch experience that Apple believes to be both, fast and fluid while still providing all-day battery life.

The iPad mini features a front-facing FaceTime HD camera and a 5-megapixel iSight camera at the back, which allows for recording full 1080p HD video. The iSight camera includes video image stabilisation and both cameras feature backside illumination, which Apple claims will allow users to capture great pictures in low light. The iPad mini also allows easy sharing of photos with friends and family using iCloud’s Shared Photo Streams.
