Double Fine Adventure unveiled as Broken Age, pre-orders begin

After almost a whole year, we finally have a name for Double Fine’s upcoming adventure game. The company announced at the ongoing PAX that the game, funded through Kickstarter, is named Broken Age. Double Fine has also started pre-orders of the game, costing $15 (approx. Rs 814) for the standard pre-order with beta access, or $30 (approx 1628) for the “backer’s” pre-order with access to extra goodies like the soundtrack. You can pre-order the game from the official website.

Here is the official description of the game: “Broken Age is a point-and-click adventure telling the stories of a young boy and girl leading parallel lives. The girl has been chosen by her village to be sacrificed to a terrible monster–but she decides to fight back. Meanwhile, a boy on a spaceship is living a solitary life under the care of a motherly computer, but he wants to break free to lead adventures and do good in the world. Adventures ensue.”

Broken Age was the first major game to be funded on Kickstarter. While there had been other smaller games funded through the crowdfunding website, Double Fine was the first to have a major personality, Tim Schafer, behind it. This helped the campaign for Double Fine’s own adventure game to reach (at the time) record-breaking targets.

The game revolves around two characters living parallel lives

Double Fine is known for its quirky games with fantastical settings and good writing. The company is most famous for two games: Psychonauts and Brutal Legend. Both games are known for their quirky humour and strange settings.

Psychonauts is an action adventure game that revolves around a young psychic prodigy named Razputin Aquato (Raz for short) who runs away from his home in the circus to sneak into a government training camp for child psychics like himself, named Whispering Rocks. He is quickly caught by the camp’s leaders, but is allowed to stay for a while until his dad comes to take him home. A series of events leads him to discover that something wrong is going on: someone is stealing the brains of his fellow campers, leaving them mindless zombies obsessed with TV.

Most of the games levels take place inside the minds of different characters in and around the camp. This allowed Double Fine to go crazy with the level design, and there are many strange levels, including one where you’re a character in a strategy game, as well as one where you’re a Godzilla-esque monster in a sea of tiny sea monsters.

Brutal Legend is a hack-and-slash/RTS that has a metal theme. The game is famous for being inspired by and providing references to almost everything related to classic metal you can think of. All of the game’s levels are modeled around 80’s metal album covers.

The story revolves around a roadie for an average band, who is inadvertently transported to the land of metal, where he must teach humanity the ways of true metal to free us from enslavement by the Tainted Coil. The game is notable for having soundtrack composed entirely out of metal and the main protagonist’s voice actor being Jack Black.

Ever heard of one of those people who just never seem to shut up about something? Shunal is like the nerd equivalent of that guy. Believe us when we say that he can go on talking about games and smartphones for hours on end. We do manage to find some insight in his insane ramblings though, and through his moronic facade, he does seem to know more than he lets on. Sadly enough, it always ends up being about gaming with him. Or stupid, stupid puns. see more
