It’s too early to tell if Docoss is pulling the wool over people’s eyes with their X1 or if they’re legitimately offering a smartphone for Rs 888. Here’s everything we know about the Docoss X1 so far. The phone The Docoss X1 is a 4-inch smartphone with a resolution of 800 x 480. It runs on a 1.3GHz Cortex A7 chip, supported by 1GB of RAM. In terms of cameras, you get a 2MP front and a 0.3MP rear camera. Internal memory is a measly 4GB, but the phone does support microSD cards up to 32GB in size. The battery is claimed to be a 1300mAh device. The device will run Android 4.4 KitKat at launch.

Docoss released some photos and a hands on video of the phone in action and at least it looks more real than the Freedom 251 ever did. There’s no visible white-out, to  say the least.

To book the phone, you can head over to the Docoss website and enter your contact details. You can also send your name, address, city and postal code to 9223222888 or 7666204430 to book the device. We have managed to place a successful booking ourselves, using the website, and received a booking ID in return. The devices are expected to ship May 2. The company Docoss Multimedia Pvt. Ltd., Docoss X1’s parent company, was registered on 4th March this year. Their main website, docoss.co, was registered on April 27 and its sister site, docoss.co.in was created the same day. Docoss.com was registered on April 25. The company’s directors are Shashi Kant Sharma and Jitesh Kumar Khowal, both of which have held directorships at other companies such as Xenon Forex Private Ltd. and Venus Landinfra Projects. Our investigations have so far not revealed any information regarding their experience with the selling of electronic products. Opinions from industry experts We spoke to Arpita Pal Agrawal, Partner, PwC India and asked her about the company. Here’s what she had to say: While it is not yet clear whether the scheme is a scam or if it’s actually legitimate, is making a smartphone with decent specifications even possible at this price point? The smartphone market is a very competitive market with a slew of Indian, Chinese and other global brands, which leads to very competitive pricing. Such low price points can be an indicator of either heavy discounting as an entry strategy or some sort of a sham. Will this mean that other mainstream smartphone makers like Samsung, HTC will have to rethink the pricing on their entry level devices, especially for the India market? It is unlikely that mainstream phone makers will re-think pricing immediately. They are expected to wait and watch.
