Developer uses Google Glass to control drone

Independent developers tend to do all sorts of neat stuff when provided with the right technology. Blaine Bublitz proves this with his tinkering with Google Glass. Bublitz, having hacked a Glass, has managed to turn the wearable device into a control system for a Parrot AR drone. Bublitz managed to create the system using JavaScript.

Generally, Glass tends to require a voice command to start processing something. However, Bublitz has managed to get the device to respond to the movements, tilts and jerks of his head. You can check out Bublitz controlling the drone with his head in this video:

As is the case with any in-development system, Bublitz’s hack isn’t exactly the smoothest way to control a drone. The control system tends to not be very accurate overall and we doubt the range would be high enough to actually make the system useful. But these are problems that are bound to get solved as Bublitz continues developing his system.

Another interesting project using Glass comes from a startup from within Google. The app, called Field Trip, is being developed by Niantic Lab—the same developer responsible for GPS-based multiplayer game Ingress. The app aims to help boost exploration tourism in areas by providing ideas for interesting places to visit.

If you’re wondering when this technology will be available to consumers, we’d recommend not holding your breath. According to an earlier report, Google has confirmed that Glass won’t be hitting the consumer market before 2014. According to a Google spokesman, “We’re always adjusting and readjusting timelines. The most important thing that we do is focus on building a great product for users whenever that might be launched.”
