Details of Nokia Windows RT tablet emerge, debut expected at MWC 2013

Details about the rumoured Nokia Windows RT tablet have begun to emerge. A report by The Verge claims that this upcoming slate from the Finnish mobile giant will feature cellular connectivity, HDMI and USB ports along with a 10.1-inch display that is similar to the screen found on the Microsoft Surface RT tablet. Another major revelation is that this tablet will debut in early 2013 and this matches up with earlier rumours about the possible date of announcement.

The report states that a major focus of Nokia will be on its battery equipped keyboard cover. The report states, “Nokia will release a special cover for the tablet that envelops it like a book. Clicking into place, the cover provides a keyboard and a kickstand for the tablet. Nokia has also built a battery into the cover that can be used to power the tablet once it runs low on energy. Two USB ports on the case will also provide additional connectivity. We understand that the main tablet will have a 10-hour capacity with fast charging that boosts the battery capacity to 50 percent in a short period of time.”

The website goes on to state that Nokia will initially be manufacturing a smaller number of tablets and potentially build a Windows 8 device later. It is believed that Nokia’s first tablet will be powered by an ARM chip and will feature the Windows RT operating system.

An earlier report stated that Nokia is planning on further entrenching itself into Microsoft’s Windows 8 ecosystem, with the company seemingly set to announce a new device at the upcoming Mobile World Congress event in February 2013.

The new device from Nokia is rumoured to be a 10-inch tablet that will run Windows RT. Nokia had apparently planned to develop the tablet with a Qualcomm S4 processor under the hood earlier this year, but had pushed the plan back after Microsoft’s announcement of the Surface tablet. Nokia intentionally focused on smartphones and delayed development of the 10-inch tablet. The company is apparently still evaluating the current tablet market due to the below-expectations performance of the Microsoft Surface RT.

The report claimed that the tablet will undoubtedly be branded under the Lumia series and could follow a similar design to the current Lumia phones.

Earlier this month, Nokia had announced the budget-friendly Lumia 620 running on Windows Phone 8. Nokia claims that Lumia 620’s body uses a new dual-shot colour technique to deliver a variety of colour and texture effects. Dual-shot adds a second layer of coloured, transparent or translucent polycarbonate on top of a base layer to produce secondary colour blends and depth effects.

Here is a quick look at some of the highlighted features of the Lumia 620:

  • 3.8-inch TFT ClearBlack display with a resolution 800 x 480
  • 3G, EDGE, Wi-Fi, NFC
  • Bluetooth 3.0
  • GPS with A-GPS and Nokia Maps Suite
  • 5MP camera with f/2.4 aperture and 720p video recording, front-facing camera with 480p recording
  • 8GB mass memory with Micro SD support up to 64GB
