Dear Microsoft, the Lumia 950 doesn’t need Continuum, the Lumia 650 does

Let’s make no bones about it, Windows Phone sucks. The simple fact that it doesn’t have the right apps makes it more limiting than any Android phone or iPhone out there. In fact, the most exciting thing to happen to Windows Phone in recent memory is Continuum and that’s the one thing that Microsoft is still keeping out of our reach . The **Lumia 950 and 950XL** are both behemoths. They’re extremely powerful phones and are packed to the gills with features. The latter boasts of a 5.7-inch display, 20MP camera, an Octa-Core Snapdragon processor, wireless charging and maybe even the kitchen sink. To top it off, it retails for a little over Rs.48,000. Who wants that? If we were to find an Android phone with those specs, we’d give it a long, hard look and maybe even lust after it. But Windows Phone? Nah! If you can afford to splurge Rs.48,000+ on a Windows Phone, you’ve already invested in a fancy new laptop, maybe even a Surface Pro 4 at that. Why would you want Continuum? As long as everything is synced up between your PC and your phone, will you even care? Bear in mind that the Continuum is really being positioned as an enterprise feature. Any company that can afford to give you a 950XL for daily use can also afford to hand you something like a ThinkPad or an XPS 13 (you’d have an iPhone if you were on a Macbook). Enter the Lumia 650 . A gorgeous (so we’re told) device with a 5-inch AMOLED screen, 8MP camera and an affordable price tag of $199 (Rs.13,000). This phone is also targeted at enterprise users but with one fatal flaw. It’s running Windows Phone and it doesn’t support Continuum . Without Continuum, the 650 is just another lack-lustre Windows Phone device that few other than die-hard fans and people with no other option would want. Continuum would be perfect for a phone like the Lumia 650. Most of the work at any company involves e-mail and Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). If you were to tell any IT admin that all they’ll need to do is provide their employees with a Rs.13,000 phone that will do all that, they’ll jump through the roof with joy. There won’t be any need for pushing updates, worrying about installing software, configuring networks, getting complaints about slow PCs, or any of the myriad issues that plague a Windows OS. Apps be damned! A mobile in your pocket and a desktop just a dock away is a very appealing idea (to the enterprise customer, not the average consumer). But only at Rs.13,000 or thereabouts. The Lumia 950 doesn’t need Continuum. The Lumia 650 does.
