Crytek announces CryEngine 3 support for PlayStation 4

The PlayStation 4 has been getting quite a bit of support from developers. Crytek is the latest in the line of companies announcing their support for the PS4. Crytek has announced on its website that its engine – CryEngine 3 – will support the PS4. Not only will this let Crytek port its CryEngine-based games to the PS4, but it will also allow other companies that license the engine to port their games to the next-gen console.

“Our CryENGINE technology has always provided head-turning results across platforms,” said Carl Jones, Director of Global Business Development at Crytek. “By supporting developers as they build for the future on PlayStation 4, we are cementing our position at the forefront of the industry and helping others to create the best games they can in this exciting period of transition.”

Won’t look as good as the PC, but it’ll still look good

Other developers have announced support for the PlayStation 4 before. Back in March, Nvidia had announced that its PhysX technology will run on the PS4. Nvidia’s PhysX technology lets developers design real-time, real-world effects in games. Examples of PhysX can be seen in most of the AAA titles out there, the most famous of which include Batman: Arkham City and Borderlands 2.

Even Epic Games has announced that its next-gen Unreal Engine 4 will run on the PS4. The company has even shown off the engine in a couple of demos, dubbed Elemental and Infiltrator.

The Elemental demo used something called the Sparse Voxel Octree Global Illumination lighting system, which gave spectacular lighting effects. Infiltrator uses a static global illumination technique for lighting, which seems to be less taxing on the hardware. Despite this, though, while it is a given that Unreal Engine 4 would look gorgeous on a decent PC, the PS4 isn’t a slouch either.

Ever heard of one of those people who just never seem to shut up about something? Shunal is like the nerd equivalent of that guy. Believe us when we say that he can go on talking about games and smartphones for hours on end. We do manage to find some insight in his insane ramblings though, and through his moronic facade, he does seem to know more than he lets on. Sadly enough, it always ends up being about gaming with him. Or stupid, stupid puns. see more
