Confirmed - LG Optimus One to Get Gingerbread Update

It seems LG aren’t yo-yoing their stance on Android 2.3, Gingerbread, for the Optimus One anymore. After all the confusion regarding processor requirements and “evaluations”, LG have finally announced that their Froyo-based smartphone, the P500 Optimus One, will be getting the Gingerbread update.

Here’s the backstory - LG’s Facebook representative initially claimed that the Optimus One wouldn’t be getting the newly-released Android version 2.3 because it had a 1GHz processor requirement, something the phone’s 600MHz processor couldn’t match. However, the Android Lead had other ideas. He got onto Twitter and stated no such requirement existed, and that he’d know about it if it did. The incident was a rather embarassing one for LG and they quickly backtracked on their announcement by making a brief statement on their website that they’d evaluate upgrading their phones to Gingerbread - but only after Google confirmed the hardware requirements and released the source code.

That evaluation certainly didn’t take too long though, as a public notice popped up on their website and this is what it had to say: “LG will upgrade all Optimus One smartphones currently using the Froyo OS to the next version of the Android OS, Gingerbread. Details of the upgrade schedule will be announced locally in due course. We sincerely apologize for the confusion and misunderstanding that was caused regarding this issue.”

Acknowledging your mistakes, apologizing for them and most importantly, taking the desired course of action are things most companies would do well to learn from. Good job, LG. Here’s a well-deserved pat on the back.
