Company that acquired smartwatch maker WIMM turns out to be Google

Samsung isn’t the only company that’s poised to get into the smartwatch market. Around a year ago, smartwatch company WIMM, well known for the WIMM One developer-centric smartwatch, had gone off the grid. It had deleted its Twitter accounts and stopped sales of the WIMM One. Apparently, the company had gotten into an exclusive deal with someone else. According to GigaOm , the “someone else” turned out to be Google. The acquisition was recently confirmed by a Google spokesperson.

Old WIMM employees are currently working with Google’s Android team. Of course, the fact that the WIMM One was based on Android certainly helps. Some of them have even gone on to be fully integrated into Google’s other ventures.

Google is probably working on its own smartwatch. Nexus Watch, anyone?

WIMM’s One was an oddity in the smartwatch scene. Instead of just being a glorified notification system, the One had support for apps that were independent of the smartphone it was paired with. Along with the typical apps that let you use your smartphone from the watch, the One also had some standalone apps like a to-do list manager and an app to keep track of golf scores.

Samsung’s foray into smartwatch territory is set to start on September 4 when the Korean company will be unveiling the much-awaited Galaxy Gear. Apparently, the Galaxy Gear is set to have a high-quality 2.5-inch OLED display that will be able to show a full spectrum of colours. Under the hood, it will be powered by a dual-core Exynos 4212 processor clocked at 1.5GHz and a Mali-400 MP4 GPU. The display resolution is expected to be 320 x 320 pixels. It will be able to pair up with Android devices through NFC and Bluetooth LE.
