China's Huawei turning out to be a credible player: After Google Nexus 6P, commits $1 billion developer spend

China’s Huawei is turning out to become a credible player in the mobile market. Following in the footsteps of seasoned OEMs like LG and Motorola, it has finally teamed up with Google to create the latest Nexus 6P. In addition to this, Huawei has now announced it will spend $1 billion to support information and communication technology developers over the next five years, according to a Reuters report. “The aim is to help developers create innovative services and rapidly respond to customers’ business needs,” Huawei executive director and president of products and solutions Ryan Ding said in a statement. Recently, Huawei released a series of new devices in India in its Honor lineup and also Google’s 2015 flagship model –  Nexus 6P. However, unlike most other Chinese vendors who announced a Make in India plan, Huawei has no plans to build the Nexus in India yet. Over the past couple of years, India has become an important market for the Chinese vendor. To keep up with fierce competition in the mobile market, it has dived into other product categories as well. For instance, the newly launch Honor fitness band, and the Honor power bank was sold exclusively on Flipkart’s Big Billion Day sale. It is also said to be working on Window 10 based 2-in-1 devices or convertibles to be launched in 2016. Huawei’s top official had recently disclosed how the Chinese telecom equipment maker smartphone brand Honor is aiming to double sales, and in turn, double profits with a strong focus on India. “India is the most important market for us and over 300 engineers are working on the brand from India’s research and development centre in Bengaluru,” Zhao Gang, vice-president, Honor International Business, told IANS. The company has sold 20 million handsets globally and aims at a sales volume of 60 million by selling 40 million handsets this year.
