CES 2015: Intel announces the Cherry Trail platform, keeping the affordable-tablet market in mind

Intel has been on an announcement spree at CES 2015. After having announced the Broadwell U  series of Intel 5th gen core processor family, Intel showcased its Curie wearable platform and RealSense camera sporting drone. Intel has also announced its Cherry Trail platform . Intel Cherry Trail platform is the next generation Atom processors which will be the successor of the Bay Trail platform. Cherry Trail processors will be seen on low-end tablets and hybrids. Built on the same 14nm manufacturing process as the Intel Broadwell processors, the Cherry Trail chips will be seen on tablets and hybrids in the first half of 2015. Despite being a low-end platform, Intel has promised that Cherry Trail will include RealSense technology as well as Intel’s Context Aware technology capabilities. Apart from this, one can expect slight boosts in terms of battery life, graphics performance, general compute performance at the same time keeping the power usage in check. It is expected that the Cherry Trail - T chips will also support HDMI 1.4b which has support for 3D output as well. Intel hasn’t shown off any tablet or hybrid running off the Cherry Trail chips, letting the OEM makers take that call. Intel has mentioned that these chips will work well with LTE Advanced modems which will enable low-end tables to sport 4G functionality as well.
