CES 2012: Intel promptly responds to 'fake DX11 demo' goof-up

Intel went into a full damage control mode yesterday, as they hurried to squash any rumours that they had fudged a live demo of the DX11 capabilities of Ivy Bridge. The whole fiasco began during Intel press conference when Mooley Eden, General Manager of Intel’s PC group took the stage to demo Ivy Bride’s DX11 prowess. The setup included an Ultrabook hooked up to a steering wheel and Codemaster’s F1 2011, all running in DX11 mode. As Mooley was supposedly playing the game in real-time, the unmistakeable control panel of VLC pops up from below and when you’re projecting this on a giant screen, it’s really hard to miss.

Whoopsie!

Whoopsie!

This caused a big row among media journalists, as it meant Intel was cheating, and really shabbily, too. Later on, Intel issued an official statement stating that Eden did use a video, but it was the one created as a backup and that the video was indeed recorded on a Ivy Bridge CPU. This makes us wonder why Eden never mentioned that in the press event itself? Perhaps he’s just lousy at F1 and didn’t want the whole world to know. In any case, Intel invited some journalists back to their booth the next day to try it out themselves. According to Brightsideofnews, the game was running pretty smoothly with the eye candy and resolution set to medium. You can check the video below. I guess, we can finally look forward to the IGP in an Intel CPU, after all these years.
