Canonical reveals Ubuntu OS for tablets

Canonical has announced that it will be showcasing Ubuntu for Tablets at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. The MWC beings on 25 Feb and ends on 28 February.

Canonical hopes to launch two Ubuntu tablets. According to the specifications listed for the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM), one will be a low end dual-core tablet while the other will be a high-end quad-core tablet aimed at enterprise users.

So what is Canonical offering with Ubuntu for tablets? We take a look.

Secure multi-user options: The tablet will allow users to have one account for themselves with all their personal data full encrypted. Canonical says that this comes with the Ubuntu security model that is widely used by banks, governments, etc. Users can create a guest account for others who wish to use to log onto their tablets. This is a feature that iOS users would love to have too.

No Homescreen or buttons: It’s all swipe based. Canonical states that users can touch all four edges of the screen to navigate between apps, settings and controls. There are no buttons on the Ubuntu tablet, you don’t have to keep returning to the home screen every time you want to switch apps. All favourite apps are on the left edge and you can simply swipe that to launch them.

Voice controlled HUD productivity: The Heads-Up Display comes with a voice assistant. The Heads-Up display allows users to to do complex things such as editing movies and images, documents management etc on touch devices, and transforms touch interfaces for rich applications, bringing the power of PC to tablet.

Full convergence: Ubuntu assures users that they can add a keyboard and mouse and convert their Ubuntu tablet into a full fledged PC. Users can also access Windows apps over standard protocols from Microsoft, Citrix, VMware and Wyse.
