Camera Awesome is a new free iOS photo app

There are a ton of photo apps out there for iOS, some cash cow-ey and some not. Camera Awesome is gaining a lot of buzz, especially on Twitter among iOS users. The app is free and comes with a truckload of effects, though, a lot of them need to be purchased seperately for moolah. The app was developed by SmugMug and focuses literally on being awesome. It’s schtick is to awesome-ize your memories. The app offers many ‘complicated’ features that are available in apps that you pay for on the iPhone and brings them to you for free. For instance, in an image, you can adjust the focus in a very specific spot, as well as adjust the exposure in another specific spot. You can add more light to less exposed photos and add a variety of effects and filters to your heart’s content. Finally, when you’re happy with your picture, you have to render it or what the app calls, “awesome-ize” it. Of course, you can then one-tap-share your photos to the social networks. Watch the video below to see Camera Awesome in motion.

Having used this app, it really makes itself sound quite compelling and the buzz around it makes you hit the install button rather quickly, but there were a few aspects of the app that were a little disconcerting. For instance, there are a lot of effects that you would like and you can preview your photos with them, but to “awesome-ize” your photo with the effect, you have to buy the effect. Most effects are $0.99 *approx Rs.49). That was the same model that Hipstamatic worked with. Furthermore, at first glance, it’s a little complicated and it takes a while to remember where things are. For iPhone photography ninjas, this app is excellent, as long as they don’t mind the cash cow nature of it. It might be just a little better than Camera+. Camera Awesome is available for free from the iOS App Store. It requires iOS 4.3 or higher and runs on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

Paddy does not, we repeat, definitely does NOT belong in the category of Mac-head (yeh right!). She does get excited by her iPhone and her iMac and her iPod Nano and her Macbook and Bali's iPad and her future iHouse (patent pending). Ok, so maybe her head is a little bit forbidden fruit shaped. She likes shooting video (iPhone 4 camera zindabad!) and editing montages (Final Cut Pro zindabad!), whether the scene calls for it or no. In her spare time, she's either kicking it on stage with KB the keyboard or kicking butt at Taekwondo. see more
