Bump now lets you share content from your phone to your computer

Bump, as a content transfer service is a pretty neat idea. Select the content you want to transfer from one smart device to another and “bump” your devices to complete the transaction. Now, the app will let you share your phone’s content with your computer (however, you cannot transfer from your computer to your phone yet). Once you have the app downloaded to your iOS or Android device, you select the content you want to transfer over. You then launch the browser on your desktop computer and enter http://bu.mp in the address bar. Finally, you tap your phone against the spacebar on your computer’s keyboard. And voila! your content should be transfered over. So now, you can use Bump to transfer content to yourself as opposed to its initial primary use, which was to transfer content to friends and/or family members (and of course, your own supplemental devices).

Bump, as a service can be used for transfering contacts, but the app is more known for being useful for transfering photos from phone to phone, or now, from phone to computer. Bump has also been used in preparation for the NFC generation, where ING Direct had updated their iPhone application, last year to facilitate person-to-person transactions. Each person had to confirm each other’s account number and information and then bump their phones together to transfer money from one device to another. The obvious caveat to using a service, like Bump is that if you’re using it for transfering things like money or even photos, you have to both be in the same place to do the transfer. However, the ability to transfer content from a phone to a computer is of course quite handy.

When RIM launched the BlackBerry Curve 9360 and the BlackBerry Bold 9900, last year, the common thread between those two devices was that they came with NFC. What RIM had in mind for those two devices was to create a peer-to-peer sharing service, like Bump so BlackBerry users could also transfer content from one device to another. The difference was that Bump uses Bluetooth and the BlackBerry phones used NFC to support content transfer. Bump is available for free on the iOS App Store and Google Play.

Paddy does not, we repeat, definitely does NOT belong in the category of Mac-head (yeh right!). She does get excited by her iPhone and her iMac and her iPod Nano and her Macbook and Bali's iPad and her future iHouse (patent pending). Ok, so maybe her head is a little bit forbidden fruit shaped. She likes shooting video (iPhone 4 camera zindabad!) and editing montages (Final Cut Pro zindabad!), whether the scene calls for it or no. In her spare time, she's either kicking it on stage with KB the keyboard or kicking butt at Taekwondo. see more
